Alrighty! So... Magic shards.

I'm sure some of you are wondering what the deal is with Sketchopolis and this rumor about some magic shards that's been spreading around WonderNet. Luckily for the both of us, thanks to some talk with people in the city and outside of Sketchopolis, this should hopefully answer your thoughts. Now let's see..

oh yeah bear in mind this is gonna be a bit lengthy because it's a lotta text, but i'll have it split into different segments!

BACKSTORY!
According to King Prism, the lore behind these magic little crystals begins years ago, before all of us were born. His profile goes into more detail about the story so I'm just gonna talk about the highlights (he's more of an expert on this since he has one of the shards himself), so check his profile if you want the full scoop. Okay! So basically...
There was this king back then, who was paranoid that he would go corrupt, right? So to make sure he didn't go evil he went to the mountains to these snow locals. Diana says that the journey to these folks took almost four days, since it was a steep climb and he knew he needed some help, not only to defend from the cold but also anybody that would try and steal his power. Once he got to the top of some of the mountains, he met up with a necromancer and begged for him to help with making sure he doesn't corrupt.
They were willing to help him, but disclosed that what they are about to do would cost him his life, so they double, triple-checked to make sure that he was willing to go along with it. He did, and with whatever power he had left, they were sealed in multiple shards, scattered across the world to make sure that it would be nearly impossible for anybody to collect them all.

With some more research done by Diana, it seems that the power that was used to seal these shards has gradually merged with the king's power, and has beefed it up threefold. There's so far eight known shards across Sketchopolis and beyond. There could be more. Though, she does warn that if someone were to seek more and more of these shards, they'll slowly be more and more corrupt, as they can be very unstable and affect the mind of people. The average person alone isn't capable of handling tons of power of their own at once. At most, they can handle only one magic shard due to how amplified the power is. Like the saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility. Should someone have a shard, they can wish for anything, both good or bad. They can for example, give themselves flight, or super speed. But they can also bring explosions, or cause great disruptions to everyday life.
It is possible for someone to snap out of craving power, though it is quite rigorous and is on the same level as someone going through drug rehabilitation. Umbra was one of those people to get help. In her early days on stepping foot in the light realm, she was hiding from people and doing her best to get her footing. Though one night, Eric found them but he didn't attack her. Instead he let Umbra explain what happened to her and offered to help her out. Eventually she was able to make friends and get some stable footing. She did have to undergo some therapy and rehab to get some stuff out of her system, but she says she doesn't wanna talk about it so I'll keep it here.
Diana found that these shards never really had a name before or some sort of solidified term, so she dubs them as "Power Shards". A bit bland and generic but it's perfect for the job.
Unfortunately there are some people who'll want to have the upper hand, and they'll get it by very shady and destroying means.

WHO'S OUT THERE?
It seems somebody, or rather a group of these people, are painting the picture to be more clearer. See, there's this entity called Gloombus. He's this being made only from the purest of darkness, and he seemed to have gotten word about the shards. He already has one, and that's what lets him have more sharpened powers. He's not on the same realm as we are, and as he puts it, we're in this "light realm" while he and his cronies are in the "dark realm", that being Gloomtropolis. It used to be called Gloom Town according to an ex-mare called Umbra. I can kinda see where he gets the new name... It's just riffing on Sketchopolis. How intuitive... Anyways, Gloombus is known to be able to shoot projectiles, imprison people, shapeshift, and the group of people he's in called Nightmarians, are really skilled in combat (and are proficiently violent at that.), so these guys are definitely not softies.
He's not alone in wanting more power, as he's already corrupted by even just one of the shards, which is on his forehead. Umbra says the gem on his cloak is nothing more for show and is a decoy. Alongside Gloombus is his son, Ember. He's the one who is in charge of arranging people for missions while his dad observes Gloomtropolis and occasionally scouts in secret in Sketchopolis. Fortunately, there's people in Sketchopolis who are not only defending these shards but are also keeping Nightmarians out.

WHO HAS THEM?
From what we've gathered, Umbra, King Prism, Wonder-chan, Tiramisu, Selfie, Twisted, Sarah, and myself. Most of these are used for special powers, like with Selfie, he has a magic paintbrush. Though for people like Umbra, they're what gives them life. For me though? It's a bit of a special case. See, while I do have this admittingly pretty necklace, it doesn't really affect my powers because I have dream sap in my body. So regardless if I have the necklace or not, I can use my powers still. The necklace is what just gives me more stamina and some extra abilities like flight. For folks like Wonder-chan, they're for decoration. It's not actually the best decision to make, but it seems with the way Wonder-chan is going about, she's doing okay. Diana and another group of people are still checking the effects of such power that hasn't been sealed and the impact on people it has. Not only does the smoke that's within the shard cause some pollution but also may make people sick if they inhaled too much of it. I don't think some of them realize that what they have is something that's potentially life-threateningly dangerous actually... Diana says that maybe Selfie isn't aware of it...
The rest of these power shards, we don't know or are either contained in somewhere safe and reinforced with heavy guarding to make sure nobody, not even the public, gets their hands on them.

HEY REAL QUICK shoutouts to King Prism, Umbra, Diana, and Wonder-chan for helping me with getting info on the power shards documented! Especially Umbra, I never really had an ex-mare in the Dreamscape as we were talking about all this before.
